After 22 years at the Hair Port, a salon that long sat across the street from Town Hall, Kylee Chamberlain knew it was time for a change. Owner Bonnie Liska was ready to retire and Kylee was faced with making a decision about how and where she wanted to continue her business.

“It was a very big decision, but when we moved to our current home in 2013, we immediately saw the future potential for converting the garage into a business space,” Chamberlain said. “It was just a matter of when.”

Kylee began the transition by putting her contractor Brian Dubois in touch with the Greenfield Building Inspector to discuss her options. Quickly thereafter, she brought her plans to the Greenfield Planning Board and within a couple of months in 2019 she had received approval for Kylee’s Kuts, which is about 1 1/2 miles from where the Hair Port resided.

“I was shocked at how easy it really was,” Chamberlain said.

Her 350-square foot hair salon located at 196 Bockes Rd. was in business and has been moving full-steam ahead ever since. She hired two part-time stylists, one being Liska. The space is beautiful with its rustic farmhouse interior that is fully decorated with every changing season. The salon seems to blend perfectly with her adjoined home and its manicured landscape, four-acre lot and country cottage vibe.

“It is an ideal situation,” Chamberlain admitted. “In the winter I have no driving and I’m here if my family ever needs me.” 

Chamberlain explained why she loves Greenfield. “I love that everyone knows everyone in this little community,” she said. “It reminds me of a movie, like Steel Magnolias, where everyone comes together in times of need.”

Chamberlain lives with her husband of three years, who is an employee of Stewart’s Shops, and her 16-year-old son, who attends Saratoga Springs High School. She also enjoys the love of her two English bulldogs, Digger and puppy Tank, who both frequent the salon. Digger, who is 10 1/2, is a veteran to her hair-styling business, as he also attended work at the Hair Port since he was a puppy. As the photos reveal, he learned to love the heat of the hood dryer and often can be found perched beneath it during business hours. When she isn’t working, Chamberlain enjoys golfing at Brookhaven Golf Course, country line dancing and four-wheeling.

Also in 2019, Chamberlain lost her mother. Her family purchased an authentic barber’s pole from an old-time barber that worked on Main Street in Greenwich, the town she grew up in. Chamberlain said it was an extremely emotional gift at the time of the opening.

The business has really taken off in the location. Kylee’s Kuts is open Tues-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Chamberlain serves hundreds of clients, mostly from the Greenfield and Corinth area. But clients also travel from afar places like Greenwich, Queensbury and Scotia. She is currently booking about six-weeks out. With 30 years of experience, she specializes in both men and women’s cuts and particularly enjoys doing color. Clients are big fans of her very reasonable pricing as well. The salon was named Saratoga Today’s Best Hair Salon in 2020.
